I’ve neglected to post a blog for far too long. But blame Tommy Head, the charming but clueless civil servant who’s the central character of my third book. Yes, I’ve finished it, and am now sending it to agents on a wing and a prayer. The trouble is, it’s not a popular current genre. It’s not a romance, it’s not a fantasy, it’s not a coming of age story, and it’s not a detective story. Or a crime story, or a thriller. It’s a comic satire. And therein lies the problem. More David Lodge or Tom Sharpe, more dated. But ultimately I don’t care too much, because I absolutely loved writing it. ‘The Rise and Rise of Tommy Head’ is set in the late 1980s, and lampoons government, the civil service, cold war planning, and think tanks and consultancies. I confess, I still laugh whenever I return to the copy to fine tune another word, or phrase. In the meantime wish me luck. I’ll need it.
