What genre is my book?

Updated: Aug 18, 2022

History? Mystery? Psychological Drama? Thriller? Coming of Age? Travel? Adventure?

This is an issue I’ve struggled with throughout, and still am. Why? Because like so many other titles, ‘Stalker’ is a mix of genres, and slapping a label on it just doesn’t work for me.

On some sites it's in the crime, thrillers and mystery categories, but there’s no crime involved, and I don’t think it’s a thriller either. Do other writers have this problem too, and is it OK to say a book is a cross-genre work? Or should the title do the work instead? And by settling for certain genres, isn't a writer in danger of cutting off interest from potential readers who have been trained in their preferences by genre diktats.

I appreciate on a daily basis how complex marketing is: here’s another aspect which continues to challenge and sometimes confuse me. My bookshelves bear witness!
