Story Background

My first novel, Stalker - A Wall of Silence,  is a complex mix of memoir, fact and fiction, inspired by an encounter from my schooldays with a piano teacher who was fixated on the British composer, Benjamin Britten.

Years later I learnt about a woman who invaded a performance of Britten's opera, 'The Turn of the Screw', at the eighth Aldeburgh Festival in 1955, and wondered whether this woman and my teacher were one and the same person.

When my quest to establish the truth was frustrated by a wall of silence  I set out to create an alternative story, one that ultimately leads to the woman's recovery and redemption.

In the process I drew on my own schooldays and history to construct a psychodrama involving stalking, obsession, unrequited love, and picaresque encounters that vividly evoke the  period.
